Black History Month: There Wouldn’t Be A Reproductive Justice Movement Without Black Women

On June 1994, a group of twelve Black women gathered in a Chicago hotel and created the term “reproductive justice” (Guerrero, 2021, Source). Their names were: Reverend Alma Crawford, Evelyn S. Field, Terri James, Toni M. Bond, Bisola Marignay, Cassandra McConnell, Cynthia Newbille, Lorretta Ross, Elizabeth Terry, Winnette P. Willis, ‘Able’ Mable Thomas, Kim Youngblood. They referred to themselves as the “Women of African Descent for Reproductive Justice” (Guerrero, 2021, Source). The goal of the group was to bring awareness to the challenges that Black Women face within reproductive heath (Guerrero, 2021, Source). The National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda defines reproductive justice as: “the human right to control our sexuality, our gender, our work, and our reproduction. That right can only be achieved when all women and girls have the complete economic, social, and political power and resources to make healthy decisions about our bodies, our families, and our communities in all areas of our lives.”
This Black History Month and every month after that, let’s honor these twelve incredible founding mothers of Reproductive Justice and the enormous positive impact that they had in history. If it wasn’t for Black Women there wouldn’t be a reproductive justice movement or any other social justice movement at that!

Lorena

A Day In The Life
I have amazing news! I’ve recently accepted a job offer in a new city! All glory to God because I couldn’t have done it without him 🙏🏼.
As many of you know, I was laid off this past October 2023 from a position that I had only been at for four months… I know… The organization decided to eliminate my ENTIRE department. Unfortunately, this lay off and the relocation cost of me moving to DC from NYC to work for this organization has put a HUGE financial strain on me. Mentally and emotionally I haven’t been my best.. However, I kept my faith strong because even through this situation, I knew that God had a bigger and better plan and opportunity that was right for me. And it happens to be in a new city!
I created a GoFundMe to help with my relocation cost for this amazing opportunity. I would really appreciate it if you could donate or even simply share this post with you network. Anything helps. Thank you so much for your support! 🫶🏼
Con Amor,
Lorena
