Let’s Get Into It…
As a Latina (Chicana/Tejana) and a daughter of immigrants, tapping into our sexuality is seen as a shameful act (from my experience). I grew up with very strict parents who didn’t have the privilege to sit down with my sisters and I to have conversations because they were both working long hours to put food on the table.
My parents instilled in us from a very young age that engaging in any type of sexual activity was “bad” and if we did, we were going to end up with our domingo siete. And for all my non Spanish speakers reading this, "domingo siete” refers to a young single woman getting pregnant. Growing up in south Texas didn’t make any of this better because abstinence was all that we were taught in school. There is so much shame that surrounds a woman’s body and the act of her being sexy and sexual. I grew up feeling ashamed about myself, my body, and my desire to be sexy and sexual because I was afraid of being stigmatized when there is already so much stigmatism around being Latina, first-gen, a daughter of immigrants, and growing up in low-income area… But as I got older I learned that embracing your sexuality doesn’t mean you’re headed down the “wrong” path. I learned to re-define what being sexy and embracing my sexuality looked like and felt like for MYSELF…

What does being 'sexy' mean to you? What does it look like to be sexy for YOU? For a very long time (and sometimes I still get in my head about this) I thought the only way I could be sexy was by having big boobs and a big ass. This led me to feel insecure about my body because I didn’t meet societies standards of 'sexy'. But being sexy is so much more than just physical. It's about being confident in yourself and what you bring to the table. Better yet believing that YOU ARE THE TABLE. Now don’t get me started with social media and the whole BBL trend…
Now let’s talk about being sexy, sexual, and being a career woman… Being a Latina who works in politics I felt like I had to choose between embracing my sexuality, my sexiness, and my intelligence. Because society says I can’t be sexual AND smart. I moved to NYC in 2020 to pursue my career in politics. However, I also had this other dream of being a model and being a video vixen because to me they screamed sexiness. I started talking to videographers and I found myself being recruited by a casting agency. I ended up modeling in several music videos, an athletic wear brand, and for Daniel’s Leather (if you know you know 😉).

I remember my first music video I felt afraid to show off my sexy side because I had this little voice in the back of my head telling me “this is bad you shouldn’t be doing this.” But by my second and third gig that shame went away and I felt so fucking sexy. I felt sexy not because of the attention that I was getting but because I felt unstoppable. Everything I said I wanted to do, I was doing and in NYC! I also felt sexy because for the first time in my life I was actually embracing who I was and my sexuality and I didn't feel ashamed for doing so.
Diane Guerrero said it best in her Playboy 20Q interview: “Latinas especially are not allowed to be sexual and smart at the same time…” I have my bachelors degree, a career in politics, and I occasionally like to shake my ass in music videos. But why do I have to choose between being sexy AND smart? Why do I have to choose between a career in politics and a modeling career? Why can't I do both? Why does me being sexy and sexual have to define my intelligence? Even when I said I wanted to model, I was told that I couldn't because I had to choose between politics and modeling because people were going to perceive me a certain way. But yet again, I proved them wrong. I can be sexy, sexual, AND smart.
At the end of the day, there is nothing wrong with embracing your sexuality. Don't let society, social media or your culture define what sexy looks and feels like for you. It’s apart of what makes you the woman you are. So love her. Nurture her. And always put her first.
Con amor,
Lorena

This months P Files Spotlight we want to highlight yours truly! 💁🏻♀️ My name is Lorena Rodriguez Banda and I’m the founder of The P Files. I started this newsletter because I want to see more representation of black and brown women within sexual health and reproductive health, politics, sextech, and sexual wellness. I also want to start conversations around sexual pleasure and health stigmas/taboos within Black and Brown communities; and redefine what it looks like for women, especially women of color, to run for office. Our stories and our experiences are a crucial part of creating actual change within these industries and laws. However, often times (too many times) we are ignored or we are told that we don’t have enough “experience” to actually work within these spaces... Well I got tired of being told no and I decided to create my own table.
I’m a proud daughter of hardworking Mexican immigrants and first generation. I received my Bachelors Degree in Social Work from Texas State University. I have served as an electoral campaign strategist, and experienced professional in grassroots organizing, government, and in the Femtech industry. I moved to New York City in 2020 to pursue my political career, which led me to work on over six electoral campaigns at the state and local level. Most recently, I was the Training Manager at EMILYs List under their Training and Community Engagement department in Washington D.C.
Navigating worlds where you are the first in your family to enter can be very difficult and exhausting. Sometimes you just have to create your own opportunities to create the change you want to see.
